Anatomia comparada do lenho de Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. (Leguminosae-Caesalpinoideae) de floresta e cerradão Rev. Bras. Bot.
MARCATI,CARMEN REGINA; ANGYALOSSY-ALFONSO,VERONICA; BENETATI,LUCIMAR.

Assessment of the dendrochronological potential of Licaria bahiana Kurz, an endemic laurel of lowland Atlantic forests in Brazil Acta Botanica
Fontana,Cláudia; Santini-Junior,Luiz; Olmedo,Gabriela Morais; Botosso,Paulo César; Tomazello-Filho,Mario; Oliveira,Juliano Morales.
ABSTRACT The Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil has been considered to have the highest number of tree species per hectare in the world. Assessing the influence of climate on tropical tree species is a priority in the face of ongoing climate change, and for which dendrochronological studies have been important. We address the dendrochronological potential of Licaria bahiana Kurz (Lauraceae), an endemic species of the Atlantic forests. We studied growth ring anatomy of L. bahiana and applied dendrochronological methods to investigate how short-term variation in climate affect its radial growth. Distinct growth rings were observed in all individuals and demarcated by darker tangential fiber zones in latewood. Trees showed high climatic sensitivity (0.48)...

Charcoal anatomy of Brazilian species. I. Anacardiaceae Anais da ABC (AABC)
GONÇALVES,THAÍS A.P.; SCHEEL-YBERT,RITA.
ABSTRACT Anthracological studies are firmly advancing in the tropics during the last decades. The theoretical and methodological bases of the discipline are well established. Yet, there is a strong demand for comparative reference material, seeking for an improvement in the precision of taxonomic determination, both in palaeoecological and palaeoethnobotanical studies and to help preventing illegal charcoal production. This work presents descriptions of charcoal anatomy of eleven Anacardiaceae species from six genera native to Brazil (Anacardium occidentale, Anacardium parvifolium, Astronium graveolens, Astronium lecointei, Lithrea molleoides, Schinus terebenthifolius, Spondias mombin, Spondias purpurea, Spondias tuberosa, Tapirira guianensis, and Tapirira...

Comparative studies on morpho-physiological traits of six Amazonian species of Bellucia and Miconia (Melastomataceae) and implications for their ecological behaviour. Infoteca-e
PREISINGER, H.; DUNISCH, O.; MORAIS, R. R. de; RICHTER, K.; ARAUJO, R. C..
Plants of six species from the Melastomataceae family (Miconia spp. and Bellucia spp.) taken from secondary forest stands of Terra Firme near Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, were studied with regard to growth form, biometric traits of the plants, morphological and anatomical characteristics of leaves and wood. In addition, plant biomass and the content of mineral nutrients of different parts of the plants were analysed, and xylem flux measurements were carried out to determine the specific water uptake of the plants. The aim of the studies was to detect causal links between the parameters measured and the ecological behaviour of the species as observed in the field, in order to provide an autecological description of the species. The results show that the plant...

Comparative Wood Anatomy of the Primuloid Clade (Ericales s.l.) Naturalis
Lens, F.; Jansen, S.; Caris, P.; Serlet, L.; Smets, E..
The wood structure of 78 species from 27 genera representing the woody primuloids (Maesaceae, Myrsinaceae, and Theophrastaceae) was investigated using light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results indicated that the ray structure, the nature of mineral inclusions, and the occurrence of breakdown areas in rays can be used to separate the three primuloid families from each other. Within Ericales, the presence of exclusively multiseriate rays is synapomorphic for Myrsinaceae and Theophrastaceae, and the occurrence of breakdown areas in rays is synapomorphic for Myrsinaceae. Within Myrsinaceae, the wood structure of the mangrove genus Aegiceras differs because it has short vessel elements that are storied, non-septate fibers, a...

Do quantitative vessel and pit characters account for ion-mediated changes in the hydraulic conductance of angiosperm xylem? Naturalis
Jansen, S.; Gortan, E.; Lens, F.; Assunta Lo Gullo, M.; Salleo, S.; Scholtz, A.; Stein, A.; Trifilò, P.; Nardini, A..
• The hydraulic conductance of angiosperm xylem has been suggested to vary with changes in sap solute concentrations because of intervessel pit properties. • The magnitude of the ‘ionic effect’ was linked with vessel and pit dimensions in 20 angiosperm species covering 13 families including six Lauraceae species. • A positive correlation was found between ionic effect and vessel grouping parameters, especially the portion of vessel walls in contact with neighbouring vessels. Species with intervessel contact fraction (FC) values < 0.1 showed an ionic effect between 2% and 17%, while species with FC values > 0.1 exhibited a response between 10% and 32%. The ionic effect increased linearly with the mean fraction of the total vessel wall area occupied...

Ecological significance of wood anatomy of Alseis pickelii Pilg. & Schmale (Rubiaceae) in a Tropical Dry Forest Acta Botanica
Campbell,Glaziele; Rabelo,Guilherme Rodrigues; Cunha,Maura Da.
This work describes, analyzes and compares the wood anatomy of Alseis pickelii from two distinct sites in Tropical Dry Forest. One site is an exploited forest that was disturbed by deforestation whereas the other site is preserved and has not been logged since selective logging in the 1960's. For the evaluation of wood anatomy, plant material was processed following standard techniques for light microscopy and histochemical tests. The results indicated that A. pickelii did not vary qualitatively between the two sites. The histochemical tests indicated the presence of prismatic crystals and starch in radial parenchyma of samples from both sites. Some quantitative parameters differed significantly between the two sites including: vessel frequency; vessel...

Estudo anatômico comparativo do lenho e da casca de duas espécies de Eugenia L. (Myrtaceae) Rev. Bras. Bot.
SOFFIATTI,PATRICIA; ANGYALOSSY-ALFONSO,VERONICA.

Fossil woods from the Oligocene of southwestern Patagonia (Río Leona Formation): Atherospermataceae, Myrtaceae, Leguminosae and Anacardiaceae Ameghiniana
Pujana,Roberto R.
Fossil woods from Oligocene Río Leona Formation were studied and described. A new morphospecies of Myrceugenellites with affinity to Myrtaceae was described and a new morphogenus, similar to Schinus (Anacardiaceae), was erected and documents the first fossil wood with this affinity from Patagonia. The diagnosis of Laurelites doroteaensis with affinity to Atherospermataceae and Doroteoxylon vicente-perezii with affinity to Leguminosae were amended. All the described woods resemble the wood of extant species that today inhabit Patagonia with the exception of D. vicente-perezii - the generic affinity of which remains uncertain.

Fossil woods from the Oligocene of southwestern Patagonia (Río Leona Formation): Rosaceae and Nothofagaceae Ameghiniana
Pujana,Roberto R.
Systematic studies of angiosperm fossil woods from sediments of the Río Leona Formation were continued. A new morphospecies of Maloidoxylon with affinity to Rosaceae was described and constitutes, together with the fossil pollen from the same strata, the oldest South American fossil with this familial affinity. Nothofagaceae fossil woods are represented by the morphospecies Nothofagoxylon scalariforme Gothan, Nothofagoxylon kraeuseli Boureau et Salard, Nothofagoxylon triseriatum Torres et Lemoigne, Nothofagoxylon ruei Salard and a new morphospecies of Nothofagoxylon. Three of the four subgenera of Nothofagus were recognized in the fossil woods and a new infrageneric affinity for Nothofagoxylon ruei was proposed. The described woods have affinity to extant...

Growth rings in cerrado woody species: occurrence and anatomical markers Biota Neotropica
Marcati,Carmen Regina; Oliveira,Julia Sonsin; Machado,Silvia Rodrigues.
Growth ring occurrence was investigated in 48 representative species of cerrado in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. We characterized growth ring markers and described the growth layer structure of the basal portion of the most developed stem branches in woody plants. Growth rings were poorly defined in 33%, well defined in 61% and not discernable in 6% of the species studied. Various anatomical features were used as growth markers, such as: thick-walled latewood fibres; radially flattened latewood fibres; fibre zones; distended rays; marginal bands of axial parenchyma; marginal lines of parenchyma; and closeness of the narrow bands of scalariform parenchyma. In a single species, different growth ring markers often occurred together. Within growth layers,...

Hydraulic architecture of lianas in a semiarid climate: efficiency or safety? Acta Botanica
Carvalho,Ellen Cristina Dantas; Martins,Fernando Roberto; Soares,Arlete Aparecida; Oliveira,Rafael Silva; Muniz,Celli Rodrigues; Araújo,Francisca Soares.
Xylem anatomical traits can provide insights regarding the mechanisms affecting the distribution of vascular plants across environmental gradients. In this study, we aimed to investigate the hypothesis that lianas occurring in semiarid environments have characteristics that maximize the xylem resistance to tension-induced cavitation along the root-stem-branch continuum. To gather information regarding the hydraulic architecture of the lianas, we analyzed several anatomical traits of wood: cross-sectional area occupied by the parenchyma (AP), fibers (AF), and vessels (AV); average vessel diameter (d); wood density (WD); pit diameter in the vessel wall (dpit); pit density (Npit), and potential hydraulic conductivity (Kp) in branches, stems, and roots of...

Intervascular pit membranes with a torus in the wood of Ulmus (Ulmaceae) and related genera Naturalis
Jansen, S.; Choat, B.; Vinckier, S.; Lens, F.; Schols, P.; Smets, E..
• The distribution of intervascular pit membranes with a torus was investigated in juvenile wood samples of 19 species of Ulmus and seven related genera. • A staining solution of safranin and alcian blue (35 : 65) was recommended to distinguish torus-bearing pit membranes using light microscopy. • Intervascular pit membranes connecting relatively wide vessel elements resembled those of most angiosperms, as they were of uniform thickness. By contrast, bordered pit pairs with round to oval pit apertures and indistinct pit canals that connected narrow (incomplete) vessel elements or vascular tracheids with distinct helical thickenings were frequently characterized by a torus in ring-porous wood samples of Ulmus and Zelkova. Tori were lacking in...

Quantitative features of Cedrela odorata L. wood (Meliaceae) Rev. Bras. Bot.
Luchi,Agnes E..
Cedrela odorata L. (Meliaceae) occurs in the Atlantic forest, Amazon rain forest, riparian forest of the country, and wetlands, which demand species adapted to their water conditions. Studies in ecological wood anatomy demonstrated that weather factors' variations have direct influence on the wood anatomical structure and that the fragmentation of the natural habitats is a direct cause of the edge effect which alters the abiotic aspects of the location, interfering consequently in its vegetation. A comparative analysis of 20 anatomical quantitative features of the wood structure was performed in populations of Cedrela odorata growing inside and on the edge of the swamp forest and granulometric analysis was made on the soil. The quantitative data were...

Relationships within balsaminoid Ericales: a wood anatomical approach Naturalis
Lens, F.; Dressler, S.; Jansen, S.; Van Evelghem, L.; Smets, E..
Wood samples of 49 specimens representing 31 species and 11 genera of woody balsaminoids, i.e., Balsaminaceae, Marcgraviaceae, Pellicieraceae, and Tetrameristaceae, were investigated using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The wood structure of Marcgraviaceae, Pellicieraceae, and Tetrameristaceae is characterized by radial vessel multiples with simple perforation plates, alternate vessel pitting, apotracheal and paratracheal parenchyma, septate libriform fibers, and the presence of raphides in ray cells. Tetrameristaceae and Pellicieraceae are found to be closely related based on the occurrence of unilaterally compound vessel-ray pitting and multiseriate rays with long uniseriate ends. The narrow rays in Pelliciera are characteristic of...

Soil properties and variability of tracheid dimensions and wood density in Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Corrêa, Robson Schaff; Bellote, Antonio Francisco Jurado.
The understanding of wood quality in relation to different forest sites is of fundamental relevance in current timber market. There are only few studies available concerning soil and wood quality of tropical pinots. So, the goal of this work was to characterize tracheid dimensions and wood density of Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis, correlating these variables with soil properties at different sites. Discs were taken at 1.3 m height and comprised two radial samples in each of the four dominant trees removed at four different sites. Measurements for wood density were made from the third to the eleventh year old rings, and the measurement of tracheid dimensions were made in the fourth, eighth and eleventh year sold rings. The soil, collected in the canopy...

Systematic wood anatomy of the tribe Guettardeae (Rubiaceae) Naturalis
Welle, B.J.H. ter; Loureiro, A.A.; Lisboa, P.L.B.; Koek-Noorman, J..
Systematic wood anatomy of the tribe Guettardeae (Rubiaceae). The wood anatomy of nearly all genera of the Guettardeae (Rubiaceae, Guettardoideae) has been examined, and in this respect the tribe is heterogeneous. Suggestions are made for a delimitation of the tribe. Guettarda, Bobea, Antirhea, Malanea and Chomelia Jacq. are sufficiently similar in their wood anatomical characters to warrant retention in the same tribe. Machaonia, Timonius and Dichilanthe are anomalous. Suggestions are given for taxonomic revisions of some genera based on their wood anatomy.

The multiple fuzzy origins of woodiness within Balsaminaceae using an integrated approach. Where do we draw the line? Naturalis
Lens, F.; Eeckhout, S.; Zwartjes, R.; Smets, E.; Janssens, S.B..
• Background and Aims: The family Balsaminaceae is essentially herbaceous, except for some woodier species that can be described as ‘woody’ herbs or small shrubs. The family is nested within the so-called balsaminoid clade of Ericales, including the exclusively woody families Tetrameristaceae and Marcgraviaceae, which is sister to the remaining families of the predominantly woody order. A molecular phylogeny of Balsaminaceaeis compared with wood anatomical observations to find out whether the woodier species are derived from herbaceous taxa (i.e. secondary woodiness), or whether woodiness in the family represents the ancestral state for the order (i.e. primary woodiness). • Methods: Wood anatomical observations of 68 Impatiens species and Hydrocera...
